Birmingham, UK (April 4, 2005) - Cummins exhibits the Euro IV ISBe engines for the first time at the Commercial Vehicle Show. For Euro IV these engines have been improved in key areas, benefiting coach and bus operators with higher performance and lower operating costs. Torque and power are increased, allowing the ISBe engines to move up to new application classes traditionally associated with engines of higher displacement. The increase to 300ps gives the 6-cylinder ISBe the highest power-to-weight ratio in its class.

Design enhancements include the new block with higher displacement, the Cummins Integrated Emissions Management system (IEM), the new High-Pressure Common-Rail fuel system, the new Electronic Control Module and the Rear-Engine Power Take-Off facility.

The new block design has increased displacement from 3.9 to 4.5 litres (4 cylinder) and 5.9 to 6.7 litres (6 cylinder). Growing displacement allows the 4-cylinder ISBe to move up to 185ps and 700Nm peak torque which is traditional 6-cylinder engine territory. The 6-cylinder ISBe moves up to 300ps and 1100Nm peak torque. This reflects a massive 17% increase in torque versus Euro III.

The ISBe engines will meet the Euro IV emissions legislation with the IEM system using Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology, as announced by Cummins in 2003. It is a fully integrated engine management and aftertreatment system with all components available from Cummins Inc. companies. The whole system is controlled and monitored from the engine-mounted ECM, which improves reliability, lowers cost and provides ease of installation. This single-source approach offers coach and bus builders the complete engine to exhaust pipe solution, all warranted by Cummins.

The use of SCR Cummins has been focused on lowering the total cost of ownership. The operator will realise that Cummins Euro IV technology provides cost savings that more than justify the investment in equipment. Operator credentials for supporting the very latest low-emissions and environmentally friendly passenger service vehicle solutions are now provided from exhaust system components constructed from stainless steel for exceptional long-term durability, and a particulate filter trap system is no longer needed to meet the Euro IV standard because of the SCR technology.

Further improvement includes a new High-Pressure Common-Rail fuel system, which is now capable of generating up to 1600 bar injection pressures. This translates to refined and rapid power delivery, reduced noise and improved cold start. Injection pressure can be virtually constant at all speeds, realising greater flexibility and precision in controlling both injection rates and timing.

The new High-Pressure Common-Rail fuel system is fully integrated with Cummins high-precision electronic management system, driven by an upgraded CM850 ECM (Electronic Control Module) with a processing speed over twice as fast as the previous ECM. The ISBe engine management system continually maintains an optimum balance between load demands, fuel-efficiency and emissions control. The CM850 ECM is designed for isolation from detrimental thermal and vibration loading for extreme reliability and durability.

The Cummins ISBe brings advantages to both vehicle manufacturers and operators.
